About elmo

elmo aims to be the easiest way to switch to an electric car.

The elmo team believes that new technology should benefit everyone and work for a brighter, cleaner future for people and the planet.

Customers can select and subscribe to an electric car in a few minutes on the platform. There’s no deposit to pay and users can keep the car for as long as they like on a simple monthly subscription plan. Only 30 days’ notice is required to return the car (just like Netflix or Spotify).

The basic package includes the electric car, comprehensive insurance cover, maintenance and breakdown cover.

In other words, everything you need for truly ’net zero’ driving is included in a single monthly price.

Customers can also choose to add a ‘bundle’ of services to their subscription to fit their lifestyle and preferences, such as public charging.

How it Works

The sign up process takes 5 minutes and is all done online.

  • Customers register by uploading their driving license, proof of address, and a selfie
  • The elmo team runs identity and driving license checks to verify eligibility
  • elmo delivers anywhere in Great Britain and as early as one week from booking, depending on car availability
  • Customers get a physical key with the car and an online dashboard with all their driving data
  • elmo’s minimum term is just 60 days

Costs and Fees

Their pricing aims to be competitive when compared with lease deals, but without a deposit or lengthy contract. At the point of booking, customers are asked to make an initial payment covering the following:

  1. First month of subscription. The first month of subscription is taken upfront at the point of booking. Future monthly payments from the second month onward will be taken by Direct Debit.
  2. Delivery. A flat fee of £119 for all of England and Wales. Additional delivery fees may apply for Scotland.

There is also an early return fee of £199 for 60-day contracts, or £750 for 12-month contracts.

Standard package pricing
The standard package is the monthly price each car is advertised for on the website. This includes:

  • Electric car hire
  • Comprehensive insurance cover
  • All scheduled maintenance & servicing
  • Breakdown cover

The standard package fee may vary depending on how long users choose to have the car and how many miles per month they need.

The basic mileage allowance is 800 miles per month (though this rolls over so just needs to average at 800 miles per month for the period the user has the vehicle).

  1. Complete scam. Watch out for fake positive reviews with a "referral" code. I'm just lucky I decided to try it for only 60 days before committing to something longer. The car arrived with numerous cosmetic faults that I didn't mind, but the computer also randomly and frequently malfunctioned, sending warning lights and loud chimes for everything from "check airbag" to "SOS call unavailable". I immediately reported the problem to elmo, and after chasing several times and "escalating" was offered a repair appointment in six weeks at a dealership 45 minutes away from my home. This would mean taking time out of work, driving 45 minutes away, driving a courtesy vehicle back and then doing the same trip to collect the vehicle whenever repairs were complete. To be clear, I received a malfunctioning vehicle and elmo's escalated resolution was to tell me to live with it for six weeks and then sort the repair myself. They even had the audacity to charge me another £119 to collect the vehicle after I cancelled. A brand new vehicle from a leasing broker is £150 LESS per month for a 24-month lease, so you're essentially paying WAY more for the short term and convenience, but there's nothing convenient about driving a banged up, short-circuiting car with no reasonable resolution. - from VP | 23. 2. I had an incredible experience with elmo. From the start, the sign-up process was seamless, the car was immaculate and reliable throughout my entire subscription period. The customer service team was responsive and accommodating to my needs. Thanks! - from Tom | 9. March 2023
  3. I've been with Elmo Drive for a couple of months now, previously with ONTO and I can say both services are excellent, its hard to fault the service when the car arrives and you just get to drive it without any extra costs, it doesn't get better. - from David | 21. April 2022
  4. What I like: • Very responsive customer service. Nod to Lucas. What I didn't like: • Small range • Not as competitive as Onto (fewer miles, no charging inc, etc) • The extra carbon offset charge. I am already doing my bit by going electric • The surcharge for living in London • The collection driver not conducting a damage check. Be warned they do this way after they pick up which gives plenty of time for dinks etc to happen. - from daniel | 14. July 2021
  5. Disclaimer; this is a review of Elmo's customer service thus far, not of the car itself; but I their service has been really good in the arranging of my account, allowing me to take out a subscription for the MG exclusive for 1 month +, rather than the six months originally on their website which was very helpful of them. Email contact with their operatives has been quick and helpful. The car is due to arrive mid-June and I'll post a review of that process too, but so far, so good. - from angus | 25. May 2021
