About YOYO
YOYO is a car subscription company that offers vehicles on a pay-per-mile basis in the San Francisco Bay area. The company is currently trialing their service in San Francisco, but are committed to expanding to other cities within 3 months of achieving 1000 sign-ups in each location. The sign-up, delivery and returns process works through their app, and there are no credit checks, no minimum duration to take a car, no maximum mileage, and no flip limits. YOYO also offer individual and corporate memberships on their vehicles, and provide a range of sedans, SUVs, minivans, trucks and coupes.
How it works
New customers sign up on the app, which takes around six minutes and involves an ID and driving history check for insurance purposes. Then, you arrange concierge delivery, which requires 30 minutes the first time. A typical delivery turnaround is 24 hours. From there, you pay per mile and when you are ready to return or flip the vehicle, you can do so on the app. Delivery and pickup is included. Anyone over the age of 25 can sign up, but you must have a clean driving record.
Cost and fees
The typical membership fee is $300 a year. After that, you pay $0.50, $0.75, or $1 per mile depending on your pricing plan. Gas, insurance, maintenance, and the concierge service are all included in this price. There is a minimum usage of 150 miles per 5-day period but no maximum mileage.
On the insurance side, there is 100/300/25 liability coverage ($100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 bodily injury maximum, $25,000 property damage), as well as Personal Injury Protection at the level required by the jurisdiction in which the accident occurs.
The damage fee excess is $1000 per incident, but you can purchase a reducing or eliminating waiver if you wish.

What’s Special about YOYO?
YOYO is an app-based car subscription service with a concierge delivery, but this isn’t anything particularly ground-breaking. What makes YOYO different is the pay-per-mile model, which is unique in the subscription market. Instead of paying a monthly cost for a vehicle, you pay depending on use, with no upper limits, unlimited flips, and a turnaround time on returns and flips of just 24 hours. The lowest pricing tier charges $0.50 a mile and with gas included in the subscription cost, the pricing model works out completely differently from any of YOYO’s competitors.
FAQs
What is the 30-day trial?
You can try YOYO’s subscription service out for 30 days. If you don’t like it, you can return the vehicle and YOYO will give you your money back.
When will YOYO come to my city?
Currently YOYO operates in the San Francisco bay area. However, the company has stated that you can register interest for a different city, and once they get 1000 signups for that radius, they will roll the service out there.
Does YOYO run a credit check?
No, there are no credit checks. However, for the insurance, there will be a check of your driver record (and it must be clean).
How do terms work with YOYO?
The YOYO model is per mile, not per day. This means you have the flexibility to choose when you stop your subscription, or you can extend for up to 6 months, then change your vehicle if you want.
How do I stop my subscription?
Just navigate to the button in the app. From here, you can cancel or flip vehicles.
Conclusion
With a generous range of vehicles across its three subscription tiers, YOYO is offering something for most of the general public. But it is their unique pricing structure that will attract the most attention, particularly for flexible or low-mileage users who don’t want to pay over the odds for infrequent driving. The option to flip cars at short notice is also appealing to people who want vehicles for specific purposes, or for those who believe that variety is the spice of life. With the membership of $300 a year, YOYO works out as a cheap option for people who don’t drive that often and a more flexible service for high mileage users.
