About Free2Move

Free2Move is a global car rental service operating in 170 countries, also offering parking spaces, vehicle charging and car subscriptions. The subscription model is called Car On Demand and is available in Columbus, Denver, La Porte, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego and Washington D.C. The service operates on a month-to-month basis with a maximum term of 36 months, and vehicle flips allowed each month. For customers in LA, there is an electric vehicle option, and delivery is available within a 30-mile radius of downtown LA. In other locations, the service is pick-up only.

How it works

Customers must create a Free2Move account and then go through the verification process, which includes a soft credit check. You must be over 25 and under 70 (or provide a medical certificate if you are over 70) and have a good credit record and driving record, including no convictions in the last 5 years, and no more than 2 moving violations in the last two years.
Once you have signed up, you can choose a vehicle, a term, a mileage bracket and a collection day (or delivery in LA), then your contract starts.

Cost and fees

Depending on your location, the subscription fee starts at $599 or $699 per month. The Tesla in LA is from $1099 per month. There is a charge for exceeding your mileage limit, although this is calculated over the length of the term so unused mileage can be carried over.

Brands and models

Customers can subscribe to a Jeep Compass or similar standard vehicle. In LA, there is also the option of the Tesla Model 3.

Notice periods

You can cancel your contract by giving 10 business days’ notice before the end of your current payment cycle. You can also flip your vehicle with 10 days’ notice, which will effectively end your subscription and start a new one the following month.

What’s special about Free2Move?

The main plus point of Free2Move is that it is an established, globally recognized company that will ultimately deliver a reliable, trustworthy service. By allowing month-to-month subscriptions, there is flexibility, and if you live in LA, the delivery option is useful, as is the option of the electric Tesla Model 3. The service is relatively affordable, and beyond that, the subscription contract contains everything you would expect to see: maintenance, roadside assistance, registration and insurance all included.

FAQs

Can I get my vehicle delivered?
The delivery service for Free2Move is available in LA only. You must live within 30 miles of downtown.

Can I change vehicles?
You can change vehicles at the end of every month’s billing cycle. To do this, you need to give 10 business days’ notice.

How long can I have the car for?
The maximum term is 36 months, though once this is complete, you could just resubscribe.

How much notice do you need for cancellation?
You must give 10 business days’ notice from the end of your current subscription end date.

How do I get a Tesla on subscription?
Free2Move does offer a Tesla Model 3 on subscription. However, this is currently only available within Los Angeles.

Conclusion

Free2Move’s subscription service is quite limited, in that there is only really one choice of vehicle (unless you’re in LA, where you can get a Tesla). The price point is a positive, putting it in the cheaper range of subscription offers available in the US. The month-to-month contract allows for some flexibility and flips are advertised as being available monthly, although there isn’t currently anything to flip to in most of the cities served by the Free2Move Car on Demand service. The company has huge coverage with their rental service, so it is a fair expectation that the Car on Demand service will expand in the future.

  1. Utter disgrace to be offering car rentals. Went to the location in Bari Italy to collect the car for a 4 days use but the agency providing the service on behalf of free2move did not have any details about the contract. No call centres are open to talk to a physical person and email has still had no reply. Left stranded due to their ineptitude! Terrible, terrible, terrible! Avoid at all cost!! - from Dor.sha@hush.com | 2023-09-01
