About MyChoize

MyChoize Self-Drive is a car subscription service provided by ORIX. ORIX is headquartered in Japan, where it is the second-largest subscription service in the country and managed a fleet of over 60,000 cars. Now available in Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Indore, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Surat Vadodara, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Bhopal Goa, Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar, you can choose from 25 different vehicles, including SUVs and luxury cars, with a minimum rental of just 24 hours. You also get unlimited mileage with each subscription vehicle.

How it works

The entire MyChoize service works through the app in four steps:

  1. Search and choose the vehicle you want
  2. Upload scans of your driver’s license and ID document (passport / Aadhar card)
  3. Take delivery of your car, either to your home address or a pick-up point, depending on your location
  4. Arrange for return when you want/need to. Your security deposit is refunded when you return your vehicle, or you can choose another hire. Extensions are also possible with 4 hours’ notice minimum.

As with competitor subscription options, your subscription cost includes insurance, maintenance, and roadside cover. You just pay for fuel, with no limits to mileage.

Costs and fees

The refundable security deposit is a flat 6000 INR across all car types and contract lengths and is refundable immediately upon return of the vehicle. Rental charges range from 1000 INR per day for a small hatchback with a 120-km limit, to up to 100,000 INR per month for longer term subscriptions on luxury SUVs. There is a schedule of charges both for traffic violations and for damages, ranging from 300 INR as a late return charge (per hour), up to 11000 INR for broken fog lamps on luxury SUVs. The standard insurance excess is 6000 INR per claim.

Brands and models

Depending on the city you are in and the dates when you need the vehicle, you get a live range of what is available in your area. This can change day on day. Some vehicles that are commonly available throughout the coverage area are:

  • Maruti Celerio / Swift / Baleno / Ciaz
  • Tata Nexon
  • Maruti Vitara Brezza
  • Mahindra XUV 300 / Scorpio / Marazzo / XUV 500
  • Nissan Kicks
  • Hyundai Elite i20
  • Ford Figo Aspire
  • Toyota Fortruner

Notice periods

You can arrange to return or extend a car subscription with as little as 4 hours’ notice, depending on your location. Of course, more notice is always better to avoid disappointment.

What is special about MyChoize?

MyChoize is competitive in the Indian market despite not being an Indian company, but parent company ORIX is certainly a major name in Japan with a large fleet. There is the option to subscribe to quite high-end vehicles compared with its competitors, and the subscription lengths are as little as 24 hours, which is a stronger focus on short term subscriptions than other companies. The fact that you can make an order or extend with only 4 hours’ notice is also a draw for people who might live in quite dynamic circumstances, or who have last-minute changes they need to make.

Conclusion

MyChoize have attempted to corner the market in India for very short-term rentals, with terms as low as 24 hours. Generally speaking, other companies offer one-month terms, or longer in some cases. For people who don’t usually need a vehicle, or who run into difficulty with their main car, this is a convenient option. The costs and deposit are low, with 1000 INR per day for a limited mileage subscription representing value that will attract many, and the option to go for high-end vehicles will also attract custom.
